A MAN from Kwekwe has been arrested for allegedly stealing a Toyota Hilux and attempting to kidnap detectives after they had found him in possession of the car stolen in South Africa.

Shepard Tundiya appeared before Gweru Magistrate Mildred Mutuvi facing one count of theft and one count of attempted kidnapping.

He pleaded not guilty and was granted $1000 bail.

For the State, Ms Constance Mudzudzu told the court that last week on Wednesday, Tundiya was seen by police at Downtown Oasis Pub and Grill in possession of an unregistered Toyota Hilux.

The two cops Stewart Madava and Themba Nkanie produced their identity documents and introduced themselves as detectives.

“Tundiya was approached by police detectives who were on duty who suspected that the vehicle could have been stolen since it was unregistered. The detectives then demanded the papers for the motor vehicle from Tundiya but he failed to produce any document,” said Ms Mudzudzu.

Tundiya allegedly said he bought the motor vehicle in 2017 and had not registered it.

The two cops went into the car and told him to drive to the police station but he allegedly attempted to kidnap them.

“While in the vehicle the detectives gave Tundiya directions to their destination and he told the detectives that he was kidnapping them and was taking them wherever he wished. Upon reaching corner 10th street and Robert Mugabe Way, Tundiya was instructed to turn left, instead he turned right and drove towards Bulawayo at high speed,” said Ms Mudzudzu.

She said the two detectives told the suspect that he was committing an offence but he continued driving towards Bulawayo.

The two police detectives pleaded with Tundiya to drive to CID Gweru and he later complied.

At the police station checks were made through the Interpol database and it was discovered that the vehicle had been stolen in South Africa on October 19 in 2017.
